Updates

Tina Mondale – Southern Oregon Online Schools

·        Charter School Planning Grant for Online Schools – Marty will meet with Joni Gillis and Jim Green regarding charter school funding.

·        Their teachers are learning how to teach online.  They will be holding an inservice for course building June 19-23 for fall classes.

·        They are using Black Board this year:

Collaborative pools  Type convoluted
Students will work together Too many sites
Private group space Too much navigation – needs a simpler way to navigate (it needs structure)

·        Focus is on kids who fail core classes.

         Two classes in each core area.

         Align to CIM benchmarks

         Using activity-based projects and the Internet.

 

Tom Cook - OPEN

·        Meeting with community colleges and universities using eCollege.  His eCollege contact is Jim Fricia, Account Manager, NW Area.

·        Suggested having a meeting with vendors for products like, eCollege and Black Board, to take a look at what is on the market to compare what is being used in K-12.

·        Oregon Ed. Network – offering all courses

·        Community colleges are all coming on.

Steve Rutherford – CyberScholars

·        CyberScholars part of larger Summer Scholars Program (1500+students)

·        Using Academic Systems Interactive English and Math

            Net School contract in process for services

·        Will look to SK Online for Health 1 & 2 units

·        Recent passage of school measure will benefit efforts

·        Continuing involvement in Strategic Planning for Distance Education

            PPS master plan for distance education

            US Dept. of Commerce Plan for distance learning

 

Marcia Arganbright – Net School

·        Very interested in seeing vendors with interfaces that are “all ages” user-friendly and what authoring tools are available.  She has a good article and will email it to anyone that is interested in seeing it.

·        Contracting with Academic Systems and Portland CyberScholars.  Needs to know how many licenses are available.

·        Update training this summer with Academic Systems.  Held training for 8 teachers last week.

·        Trained 40 teachers in using/developing courses using WebCT.  Five to 8 courses currently under development.

·        Will hold a workshop in June to develop courses.

 

Ron Cross – Salem-Keizer School District/Willamette ESD

·        WESD had identified a new position to be licensed between the ESD and member school for online.  It will soon be advertised.

 

Michael Nickless – Molalla HS/Molalla Rivers School District

·        2nd summer for eSchool on campus with Ed. Options – Academic and Standard versions.  Needs Hispanic version.

 

MaryJean Sandall – Salem-Keizer School District – SK Online

·        New web site for SK Online ( http://www.skonline.org ).

·        Looking forward to enhanced summer session.

·        Currently has 233 students on and is adding funding for 300 additional students.

·        Charging $100 per course (if ADM already used)

·        Looking to contract with Ed. Options

·        Interested in English courses with Academic Systems

·        Pilot with Real Skills this year.

·        Applied for Javits Grant for pilot for “Child U – the Learning Odyssey”.  Jim Schnelling is the contact for Child U (www.childu.com).

·        Developing courses in Algebra, Geometry, Economics, Consumer Economics, Global Issues, Health 1 & 2, Earth Science, and 3 computer courses.  Also, Abstract Algebra, Honors Geometry, and American Gov’t.

·        ODE has pulled SK Online in on keeping track of students.

·        Internet safety (4-hr. inservice for teachers)

·        Manual for newcomers (FAQ – email addresses/contacts for existing programs)

·        SK Online volunteered their services for providing a place for discussion or to post ideas for conference prior to the workshop.  Jim will set up page and will notify when it’s ready.
