Assessment 05.3 - Constructive Conflict Resolution

How do you avoid conflict? How do you deal with conflict?

In this assignment you are to analyze and solve a conflict, using the information in the lesson.

  1. Daryll and David are having a conflict. Daryll is the quarterback and David is the center. David didn't clearly hear what Daryll called, and it cost them a sack. In the exercise below, match the key ideas (under the heading of Constructive Conflict Resolution in the lesson) to the examples that violate those key ideas.

    Key Idea

    Example

    Be honest…but tactful.

    A) It was forth down, so right after Daryll gets sacked, the opposing team has the first down. Immediately, Daryll, who is aching from the sack, goes right over to David to tell him off.

The focus must be on solving the problem…not winning the fight!

    B) Both Daryll and David keep planning their comebacks to make them look like they have the upper hand in this argument.

Deal with only one issue at a time.

    C) David wanted to tell Daryll that he couldn't hear Daryll well enough and that he needed to speak louder, but when Daryll aggressively asked him, “Do you have a problem with my leadership?,” David just said, “No.” and didn't even mention the problem.

    Use good active listening skills.

    D) When David tried to answer Daryll, he got no cues that Daryll was even paying attention to what he had to say. It seemed like Daryll wasn't even interested in hearing his point of view.

Choose a good time and place to talk about the problem.

    E) “David, this is so typical of you! The last game you called out the wrong instructions to the guard, and this time you didn't do anything. You're always messing up.”

  2. Clarissa and Sue now have these nasty rumors that each spread about the other going around the school. Clarissa feels remorse. She decides to read her Wellness 1 lesson and go through the steps of “Constructive Conflict Resolution.” In the exercise that follows, match the quoted statement given with the step in “Constructive Conflict Resolution” to which it belongs. Enter the bold words that you find for that step in the lesson. Be sure to put a period at the end instead of a colon.
    • “Why don't we both put an end to the rumors and let people know that they weren't true? As far as Jack goes, why don't we both go to him and get him to make a decision?”
    • “OK, so tell me. What was the reason that these rumors were started about me?”
    • “We need to resolve the cause of these rumors so that we can deal with things in a civilized manner.”
    • “The fact that our competition for Jack has caused us to spread rumors about each other is a problem.”
    • “I helped make this a problem by not reacting the right way on that day that you pointed toward me and acted like you were mocking.”
