Assessment 03.5 Assertive Statements

In this activity, you will practice the Assertive Statements that can help you to be less passive or aggressive.

Choose four of the following situations.

A. Your locker partner keeps making such a mess that you can't find any of your things in the locker.

B. Your best friend borrowed your favorite sweatshirt and has not given it back, even though you have hinted several times that you want it.

C. Your boyfriend/girlfriend wants to go see a movie that you have already seen and don't want to see again.

D. Your little sister got into your CDs and took one of your favorite ones, without your permission, and then loaned it to a friend who lost it.

E. Your Mom wants you to come home right after school to do your chores but you want to stay for the REACH Club meeting.

F. The kid behind you in math has a nervous habit of kicking your chair during class. it's driving you nuts.

Write an assertive statement in response for the four situations of your choice. Remember that an assertive statement is spoken directly to the person in a non-offensive way, so make sure that your wording reflects this. Try to use I-statements, not you-statements. Also, every assertive statement has three essential parts, so please identify each part of your statement by separating them as shown. The 3rd part is a statement that you make DIRECTLY TO THE OTHER PERSON, acknowledging what their feelings probably are when you make the assertive statement. Remember that for ALL THREE parts, you are QUOTING what you are actually saying to the other person. You are not just informing the reader of the situation. Review the lesson for examples.

Remember that you are ONLY WRITING the very words that you would be saying to the other person. You are not explaining it to the teacher, and you are writing a statement, not a question.

    • State your position to the other person.(Quote your evaluation of the situation.):
